Vandalia Health Hospitals: First in West Virginia to Use Newest Surgical Robot

Surgeons at hospital across Vandalia Health began using the da Vinci 5 surgical system last summer.
Intuitive’s da Vinci 5 surgical system is an advanced integrated platform designed to transform surgery to enable better patient outcomes, more surgical efficiency and actionable insights to help lower care costs.
This upgraded robotic system can be used for minimally invasive surgical procedures for urology, gynecology, thoracic, and general surgeries. With more than 150 new design innovations, da Vinci 5 expands upon core da Vinci system features, including wristed instruments, 3DHD visualization, intuitive motion and an ergonomic design.
As with all da Vinci surgical systems, the surgeon is 100% in control of the robotic-assisted da Vinci system, which translates their hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments.
The da Vinci system is used for many minimally invasive surgeries across various specialties, including general, colorectal, gynecologic, urologic, thoracic, cardiac and head and neck procedures.
“We are proud to be the premier hospital system in the region, leading the way with groundbreaking procedures like the first Intuitive da Vinci 5 robotic surgery,” said Jaschar Shakuri-Rad, MD, Medical Director of Robotic Surgery, Medical Director of Medical Specialties, and Master Robotic Surgeon. “Our commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care has established us as pioneers in advanced medical treatments such as single and multi-incision robotic surgeries to treat both non-cancerous and cancerous conditions. With 96% of our robotic urology surgeries performed as outpatient procedures and outstanding outcomes, we offer unparalleled care that is just a short drive away for most patients. Our dedication to delivering technologically advanced, effective treatments ensures that our patients receive the best possible outcomes close to home.”
Charleston Area Medical Center is among the first in the country to upgrade all its da Vinci robots to this latest technology including its single-port robot.
CAMC Memorial Hospital now has four da Vinci 5 robotic surgery systems and one Da Vinci SP system, which has been updated to use the latest technology.
“The da Vinci 5 robotic surgery system allows for greater precision, enhanced visualization and improved patient outcomes,” said Samuel Deem, DO, MBA, CAMC Director of Robotic Surgery. “With this advanced technology, we can perform minimally invasive procedures with more accuracy and control than ever before.”
Patients benefit from smaller incisions, less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.
